A copperhead snake, this found in eastern North Carolina. A venomous pit viper; it is common in much of the eastern United States, from Connecticut to northern Florida, Nebraska to Texas, and into northern Mexico. A copperhead has distinct hourglass patterns. Their bites are among the most common snake bites, but are rarely lethal to an adult human.
